It is amazing how versatile drop cloth is especially considering how cheap it is! Every day I see a new idea on Pinterest where drop cloth is being used in a new unique way and it blows my mind. Today I am sharing with you all this super Easy DIY Drop Cloth Hamper that I recently made!
Get the pattern and full instructions below!
Prior to making these Easy DIY Drop Cloth Hamper we’ve always used those plastic hampers you get at Walmart or wherever you normally shop for household items, and to be honest I always hated them!
Let’s be honest, they are so ugly and when you’re trying to decorate your home and in a corner you see these ugly plastic bins sitting on the floor it totally ruins the vibe, am I right?!
[convertkit form=1013765]Now, this is not a new idea, I’ve seen a lot of Drop Cloth Hampers before and you can definitely buy them on Amazon here if you don’t want to make one but I’m cheap and I like making things so I chose to make them myself.
I actually wanted to make one with wheels so I didn’t have to carry it around, and it didn’t just sit on the floor but requiring wheels meant that I’d have to go out and buy the castor wheels then construct a frame for it to sit upright and a base and that was just too much work for me at the time and I just kept putting it off.
SO….
I came up with a different design that I could quickly create right then and there and I already had all the stuff for it!
I designed the hamper so that the base also had a box-like structure so it would have a larger holding capacity.
I altered the design to exclude unnecessary steps for this Easy DIY Drop Cloth Hamper project
Instead of buying castor wheels, a base to secure the wheels to, then having to construct a frame for it to stand upright, I simply made and attached a hanging strap to the top with a simple drawstring and screwed an eyelet hook to the wall and hung it from that!
You can use a simple screw-in eyelet hook like I did, or you can use one of the cute rustic wire wall hooks I linked in the materials list below, and hang it from that!
Now it can hang off the floor, and eliminates all those extra steps.
Not to mention it looks much cuter than those plastic bins you normally use and it only took like 20 mins to make both of them.
Not to mention it only requires a few items you most likely already have on hand.
I made both of these using supplies left over from previous projects.
- drop cloth
- 1″ screw-in wall hooks or these cute rustic wire wall coat hooks
- Jute twine from my DIY Hanging Wood Nightstand post
- Set of alphabet stamps from my collection (optional)
- Sewing machine
- Pins
- Fabric scissors
- Measuring tape
I couldn’t find the exact scissors I have online but any quality fabric scissors will work, I’ve linked some options below.
Either these or these ones would work great.
They’ve got a classic cute look, made with heavy-duty stainless steel, AND include a bonus measuring tape. Something you’ll likely need if you don’t already have one or bonus thread nippers.
As far as the sewing machine goes, hopefully, you have one because otherwise, sewing projects take A LOT longer.
If you don’t have one I highly recommend getting one if you plan on doing really any amount of DIY sewing projects, they really make your projects much easier and sewing is a great skill to learn.
I know it can be overwhelming when comparing items like this when you’re looking to buy your first one. There are a lot of options out there and it’s not always clear which direction to go or how much to spend.
There are a few key lists of things you should keep in mind when picking out the kind of sewing machine that’s best for you.
I’ve bought a few machines over the years.
While I’m not an expert it’s my opinion that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a decent machine that will last and perform your basic functions.
The machine I have now is a Brother that I bought years ago. I can’t ever seem to find my exact model but I found this one that is almost identical as far functionality goes.
It has over 50 built-in stitches including buttonholes, plus embroidery, and monogramming stitches. It’s also got a digital screen and included an extendable table.
Which is really nice for your larger projects but buying separately can cost a good chunk of change!
If that one is still a bit too much this one is very similar but even cheaper. It doesn’t include the extending table BUT it has 130 stitches.
I’ve looked at several machines that were thousands of dollars in the past.
Only to find many come with one or two standard stitches. They don’t even include buttonholes, let alone an extendable table. On top of it all, the machine felt like it would break when I did a test stitch.
Just keep in mind while your shopping, expensive doesn’t always mean better or higher quality.
Now back to the DIY Hamper…
I also wanted to customize them a bit so, I cut out 2 little rectangles and sewed them to the side of each hamper while leaving the edges exposed so they’d fray. To give it more of a vintage rustic feel.
Then I used Chip and Joanna Gain’s rubber address letter stamp I bought on sale at Target, and some alphabet stamps I have then I stamped our names to each of them!
It was such a quick project and I love the way they turned out and how simple they are! Sometimes DIY projects don’t need to be big affairs and super elaborate.
It’s hard enough to get everything done in a day. We don’t always have time to spend hours on something, which is another reason why I love this DIY!
They do have that farmhouse vibe but they also kind of remind me of like a WWII hamper or luggage bag.
Ya’ll know what I mean….?
You know the kinds you see in movies when soldiers have their bags thrown over their shoulder as they head off to their base?!
What do you guys think, what do they remind you of?
I had an idea of how I wanted them to look in my head and I just kind of went from there.
I hope you enjoyed todays Easy DIY project!
