Our New Old House

Sharing is caring!

Guys I’m back! It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on the blog and a lot has been going on since. The biggest change you can guess from the title of this post.

That’s right you guys Tom and I recently bought our very first home!

We’ve been in our new house for a little over 5 months now. Although it’s completely different than what I anticipated our first home to be I’m loving it all the same.

In the past, I had mentioned that we were in search of our first home together. In addition, we were looking for something with acreage.

Well, as I should know by now life rarely goes how you plan it.

Instead of getting a house located on 40 or so acres, we ended up buying a historic house. Our home is located in a small farm town on a half-acre lot in a residential neighborhood.

Don’t get me wrong, half an acre is not a small lot size in a residential neighborhood. However, it’s far from the farmhouse life with roaming animals like we had been living at and planned.

Be that as it may I don’t regret the decision to buy this house in the slightest.

About Our Historic House

As I said it’s an older home in a small town here in Colorado. The house is an Italian Renaissance style home and was built in 1927.

The house itself has some fun history.

It was built for a man who was very involved in the town and its early establishment. Including establishing some of the first irrigation lines in the area, years later the house also became boys home.

It’s not haunted I swear, but it looks like it is in this photo doesn’t it?

Our house is one of the bigger ones in town, it’s four levels and has a pool in the back. The pool has been severely neglected and has been inoperational for several years.

Improvements in the making

Among getting the pool up and running again, there is a whole heap of projects I’m planing in the future.

I’m excited to share those with you guys as they happen. I’m even more excited to learn some new skills along the way.

As you can imagine a home built in 1927 comes with its own set of unique quirks and needs that a new build may not come with.

One of the big projects I’ll be undertaking is restoring all the original antique wood windows in our house.

Unfortunately, the previous owners sealed shut all of the windows in the house with screws and silicone caulk.

Inside and outside.

To be honest I can’t accurately explain to you guys how angry this makes me. Not a single window could be opened when we moved in.

It took me hours to open just half of one of the arched ones in our library.

The hours of work needed for these old windows to be opened, and restored properly is overwhelming, as we have over 20 windows in our house.

Nevertheless, the windows are probably one of the coolest things about this house. So I’m excited to start making them beautiful and functional again!

What to expect in 2021

Alrighty, that’s it for today’s post.

I wanted to pop on here real quick and give you all a quick update.

Going forward I’ll be sharing a lot of home improvement, restoration, renovation, and DIY posts here on the blog.

This is the very first home we’ve owned. Whether you’re a first-time homeowner of a brand new home or own a historical home like ours there’s a lot to know about caring for the most expensive investment of your life.

As I learn about all the ins and outs of homeownership I’ll be sharing it here on the blog. My hope is that something will be helpful to someone else out there!

Thank you soooo much for stopping by today, and don’t forget to connect with me on Instagram @heatherpaigeblog and Pinterest!
