A French Chair Roadside Rescue

This weekend I rescued this French Chair from an alleyway and plan to make it my next upholstery project. heatherpaigeblog.com

Sharing is caring!

Hey there, I hope you guys had a good weekend and enjoyed watching the Super Bowl (if you’re into that). This weekend was pretty relaxed here on the farm (like most weekends around here). One thing happened this weekend and I wanted to share it with you guys because I’m pretty excited about it. I acquired this adorable French Chair!!

You won’t guess where I got it!

On Saturday night I was laying in bed watching Downton Abby for the third time and browsing on my computer with some red wine.

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this here on the blog before but I’m slightly addicted to searching the Free section on Craigslist.

Anyway I decided to check Craigslist randomly and a couple rows down I saw this adorable French Chair posted for free somewhere in someones alleyway.

Luckily I talked Tom into taking slightly tipsy me to hunt it down. Unfortunately, the posting didn’t give an address. Just a very vague description of it being someplace in a back ally somewhere between two neighborhood streets north of a main road.

Despite the lack of direction I was determined to find this chair. Admittedly I’m a pretty stubborn person and when I decide I really want something it takes a lot for me to accept defeat.

So it’s around eleven o’clock at night and about an hour and a half later, and we’re driving a few miles an hour down every alleyway we can find within a 5 block radius of the described location.

Just when I’m about to say “forget it, it’s probably gone. Let’s just go home.” We spot it!!!

I’m so excited it was still there! I have another French Chair I bought years ago on Craigslist from someone who had found it sitting in an old abandoned barn and refinished and reupholstered it.

I paid $80 for that chair and I found this beauty for FREE!!!

Talk about a Roadside Rescue.

The chair has very similar floral carvings and overall frame design to the French Chair I bought years ago, so I think it will go well with my other furniture.

I love the wood detail you find on vintage wood furniture. You simply don’t see the same kind of quality carvings today as they used to do on older pieces, am I right!

The existing fabric is in pretty decent shape. There aren’t any tears but there are some stains. I could probably get them out if I wanted but the fabric is a pretty vibrant pink color and it’s just a little too pink for my taste. So I’ll be taking this chair on as my next upholstery project.

If you guys are wanting to get into upholstery I highly recommend reading my 3 part step-by-step upholstery series. It’s very detailed:

I’ve been trying to decide what to reupholster it with by going through my Pinterest Home Decor Inspiration board and searching farmhouse furniture.

I’d love to hear your guy’s opinion!

What fabric do you guys think I should reupholster this French Chair in?

Not too long ago I finished my latest upholstery project. It was a chair I bought on sale at a thrift store that I re-upholstered in ticking stripe fabric. I used burlap for the back and braided jute for the trim.

This was my first time using ticking stripe fabric and afterward, I realized what all the hype was about. I was very pleased with the end result.

Initially, I worried that all the stripes would make the chair look too busy. Luckily, the combination of the stripes and the burlap gave it a nice farmhouse furniture look.

I still have some fabric leftover so I’ve been considering reupholstering this chair in ticking stripe as well. I like the idea of having two chairs with the same upholstery, even though the two chairs are different styles. However, I don’t know if it would look too busy with all the existing tufts in the chair.

I was also thinking going very neutral and just doing a simple white upholstery all over.

What do you guys think?

I want the chair to be interesting but I also like the idea of having versatile pieces, because you never know how your interior design style will evolve in the future.
