I’ve built a farmhouse barn door pet gate for our laundry room where our pet pig Oliver sleeps at night. This cute DIY farmhouse baby gate is perfect to keep your pets or children in or out of areas in your home.
It’s much cuter than the traditional baby gates out there.
And it’s far more reliable and sturdy.
It’s gotten pretty cold here on the farm.
Just last week we are already over 100% higher for the average amount of snow we normally get this time of year and temperatures were in the single digits.
I mentioned before that since the weather has gotten cold here I’ve decided to bring Oliver inside the house.
When the weather is nice out he lives outside and sleeps in his Piggy Palace I built for him.
When Oliver stays inside he sleeps in the laundry room at night. Pet pigs can’t be trusted to free roam at night.
Anyone who has a pet pig will probably have a horror story or two of a time they left their pet pig unattended and they completely destroyed the house.
Oliver is no exception. He can be quite mischevious if given the chance.
So we keep him in the laundry room during beddy-bye. We used a baby gate to keep him in for a while.
However, he quickly realized that all he had to do was apply a little force and he could easily break it down.
There’s nothing worse than being sound asleep at night and at 3 A.M hearing a crash and having to corral your pig back to bed only for him to do it again 5 minutes later.
So I decided it was finally time to build a more sturdy and visually appealing DIY Farmhouse Barn Door Pet Gate.
In the post where I revealed a DIY shed I built for him (I call it Olivers Piggy Palace), I mentioned I also built his dutch door.
But I hadn’t shared with you guys how I built it.
So this was the perfect opportunity to share the DIY Barn Door Gate plans with you guys and take you through the process.

I love dutch doors and I love barn doors too.
A lot of the ones I see online are the full sliding barn doors.
I figured why not take the same concept and make it work as a pet or baby gate?
This DIY Barn Door Pet Gate is pretty simple to make and fairly inexpensive in materials. It’s a wonder why buying a premade barn door costs so much.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own DIY barn door pet or baby gate.

- Digital Barn Door Pet Gate Plans
- Set of hinges, barn door hinges
- Gate latch and hook set, latch used for top of dutch door

Note: If you don’t have a miter saw you can either hand saw it or ask your local hardware store where you purchase the lumber to cut it for you.

Obviously, the dimensions of your cut lumber might be slightly different if your door’s opening is wider or narrower than mine.
Keep that in mind and be sure to measure the opening of your door opening before you cut your lumber.
I explain how you figure out what size you should make your gate and cut your lumber to in my digital plans.
You’re going to make cuts for the top, bottom, the “X” for the front of the gate, and the slats for the back of the gate.
To make the “X” on the front of your gate all you have to do it lay the lumber over the frame of your gate and trace the lines where the frame meets what will be the “X”.
An important thing to note when figuring out the width of your gate is to account for hinge space.
It’s typical to subtract a 1/4″ from the total width of your door frame.
My door frame was 30 1/4″ wide so my door width was 29 3/4″ wide.
After cutting all your lumber arrange all the parts together.
Drill pilot holes and attach with your screws.
I recommend sanding before assembling your lumber and painting as well.
You can also choose to use wood glue when assembling to make the gate even more secure.
Thank you so so so much for stopping by my blog today.
