Today I’m going to show you guys how I made this wall gallery of DIY floating vinyl record shelves. These shelves were actually made from pallets believe it or not!
I don’t know about you guys but I love finding new pallet projects.
Wood can be kind of expensive and pallets are everywhere.
So whenever I can save some cash and reuse pallets to upcycle them into something else I’m all for it!
You might remember this wall used to have my DIY Halloween Wall Hangings of vintage skeleton illustrations on it.
Since Halloween has passed I needed to take all the decorations down. But I didn’t have anything to replace the wall hangings with.
Since my record player sits against this wall I thought a gallery wall displaying some of my records would be a perfect way to decorate it!
I’ve been building my record collection since I was in high school.
Sadly, it’s smaller than I’d like it to be.
My record player broke at one point and I wasn’t able to listen to them for a while.
Buying records that you can’t listen to would just bum me out as you can probably imagine.
However, my record player randomly decided to start working again.
So I’ve been listening to them a lot lately making up for lost time.
As I was going through my collection I forgot some of the records I had and how cool some of the covers are.
These DIY floating vinyl record shelves are the perfect way for me to decorate a large wall and display some of my favorite albums.
How To Make DIY Floating Vinyl Record Shelves
Like I mentioned these were made out of pallets so first, you’ll need to take a few boards off of the pallet.
You don’t need a lot as you can see from the photos I only had to use about 3 boards each around a foot long.
After you get your wood for the shelves you should sand them down so they’re smooth to the touch.
Next, you’ll need to mark the dimensions.
The shelves are made of three parts and each one is four and a half inches long.
The back piece and the bottom piece are both two inches wide and the third piece that makes the front ledge is one and a half inches long.
I intentionally made the shelf pieces this long because each pallet board is three and a half inches wide. This way you don’t have to do any unnecessary cutting or waste any material.
After I cut all of my pieces I wiped them all down with Mineral Spirits to get all the sawdust off of them and let them dry for a few minutes.
Afterward, I stained all the pieces with Varathane wood stain in English Chesnut and let the pieces all sit to dry.
When everything was dry I used Gorilla Wood Glue to assemble each shelf. I left the glue to dry for thirty minutes to an hour.
When everything was dry I used my Ryobi Cordless Brad Nailer to secure the back and bottom pieces together.
I did not nail the front piece because I didn’t want the nails to show in the front. The glue made the front secure enough already so I thought it was unnecessary.
To secure the floating shelves to the wall you have two options. You can either screw all the way through the back piece and into the wall. Or you can hook it from the back.
I didn’t want the screws to show, even though the record would hide them when hung. So I went with the second option.
You can use hooks to hang them but I didn’t have any on hand so I used my Kreg Jig to drill two pocket holes in the back.
Then I drilled drywall anchors into the wall at an upward angle and inserted the screws into the anchors.
I left just a small part of the screws hanging out of the anchors.
This way the ends of the screws will hook securely into the drilled pocket holes making the shelves free float against the wall.
That’s it!
Pretty simple right?!
I plan to make a few more so that the records will go all the way up to the ceiling. Having the six for right now though I think works well.
