I’m not a food blogger, but I do enjoy baking and lately, I’ve been doing a lot more of it. I baked these Banana Nut Coffee Cake Muffins for breakfast this week and I made these super easy DIY parchment baking liners for the muffins and wanted to quickly pop on here to share how I made them with you guys.

I’ve seen these tulip parchment baking liners a lot on Instagram and Pinterest and I love the way they look compared to the normal cupcake tins you usually see.

I always thought they made cupcakes look super fancy and automatically assumed you’d only find them only at some special kind of upscale bakery or something.

Well, this weekend I decided I’d attempt to make some of my own and I was super surprised how easy and quick they were to actually make.

The first time I made these I was worried the liners wouldn’t hold very well and the batter would leak out the sides and make a big mess.

That did not happen at all. These liners hold together surprisingly well and in my experience, they don’t alter the way the batter is cooked either.

The best part about these DIY tulip liners is that they are made out of biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable parchment paper! So after I’ve eaten my muffin instead of throwing it away I can add it to my compost pile.

As you know I’ve been trying to make a real conscious effort to be more aware of our household waste. Several months ago we started doing things like recycling, composting, regrowing food scraps and swapping out plastic grocery bags for reusable tote bags at the store.

We’ve also started to swap out household products for more eco-friendly brands like Seventh Generation, and Meyers products.

Ok, now that I’ve explained why I love these cute little DIY parchment baking liners for muffins and cupcakes let’s get down to how to actually make them.

What You’ll Need

  • Parchment Paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Cupcake Baking Tin
  • 1 Cup (slightly smaller than the cupcake tins)

Like I said this is such an easy DIY, it’s so easy I’m not really sure you can even call it a DIY but just go with it.

Directions

  1. Determine how many muffins or cupcakes you’ll be making.
  2. Each tulip liner is approximately 6” by 6”, and a sheet of parchment paper will make 2 rows of tulip liners.
  3. You’ll use this information to determine how long of a sheet of parchment paper to tear off.
  4. After you’ve torn off your appropriate amount of parchment paper fold it in half right down the middle taco style. Cut along the middle fold to create 2 rows.
  5. Measure and lightly mark every 6” on your 2 parchment paper rows. If you don’t feel like being that precise just eyeball it and try to make squared.
  6. After you’ve traced out all of your squares go ahead and cut them out.
  7. Choose a cup whose bottom should be just slightly smaller than the inside of your cupcake baking tin. The bottom of your cup should be able to mostly fit inside of one of the cupcake baking tins.
  8. Flip your cup upside down on the counter.
  9. Taking one cut out square parchment paper at a time, place it in the middle of the cup as precisely as you can.
  10. Using your hands carefully wrap your parchment paper around the cup by pulling it in a downward motion. Try to make the folds as tight as possible.
  11. Take the wrapped parchment paper off of the cup and turn right side up and you should have your first tulip muffin liner.
  12. Test it before making the others that it fits properly into a muffin baking tin first. The tulip liner will not want to stay in the baking tin completely, but just be sure that it will fit snuggly when the batter is added.
  13. If it’s too large find a slightly smaller cup to use as the mold, otherwise, if it fits fine go ahead and repeat the process for the rest of your parchment paper squares.

That’s it! I told you the easiest “DIY” ever, am I right?!

Quick Tip: I know it may be a little more difficult to know how much to fill the tulip liners than when using normal ones so a good amount is about ⅔ of the way to the top or a centimeter or two below the top of the baking tin. You should be able to see the baking tins shadow through the parchment paper to help you gauge it.
