Halloween is one of my absolute favorite holidays and every year I am amazed at the creativity of some of the homemade decorations I see people doing. Every year I add a little more to my Halloween decor stock and this year I finally made my own spooky DIY Halloween window silhouettes.
I’ve seen these silhouettes pop up in my Pinterest every year as October approaches and I always wanted to make them but didn’t know the easiest way to execute them.
Last year I tried finding printables that were blown up and put in a grid but even that option was flawed as it would require wasting a ton of ink printing out the black silhouettes.
This year I landed on the easiest way to make these DIY Halloween Window Silhouettes and I’m going to show you how to do it!

What You’ll Need
This project, while simple, does require some materials that you may have to purchase unless you happen to have everything on hand.
It’s not outrageously expensive but the biggest ticket item will be a projector.
Last year I didn’t want to buy one so I tried everything I could to make do without one.
I even found a couple of tutorials on how to make one yourself. It involved a shoebox, a magnifying glass, and your phone.
I made one and after fiddling around with it for well over an hour it failed miserably.
It’s just not worth the hassle you guys so trust me and just use an actual projector.
One Ideally that you can plug your phone or computer into.
It doesn’t need to be fancy, I know projectors can get pricey. I managed to find a cheap one on Amazon that would fit my needs for this project for around $35.
The other thing you’ll need which you can find on Amazon or at a local craft supply store is black craft paper.
I bought this one on Amazon.
You’ll also need something to trace on your black craft paper with.
I used these chalk markers which made it very easy to see while tracing my silhouettes!
Lastly, you’ll need clear tape.
How To Make Spooky DIY Halloween Window Silhouettes
The process for making your spooky DIY Halloween Window Silhouettes is simple.
You’ll want to do this when it’s dark out or find a dark room.
Ideally, you’ll want to find a free wall next to the window you’ll be putting your silhouette on to set up.
That way you can size your image to the height and width of your window so it is all proportionate. This helps everything look more realistic when you’re looking at it from the outside.
After you’ve selected your image and sized everything up take your roll of black craft paper and tape a sheet to your wall.
Be sure to leave a little excess that way you’re not taping where you’ll be tracing. Having excess also allows you to adjust if your traced image looks a little small or wonky.
Now just trace your image!
After you’re done tracing take it down from the wall and if everything looks well cut out your silhouette.
Hanging Your DIY Halloween Window Silhouettes
Now that it’s time to hang your window silhouettes, think carefully about placement.
Think through which parts of your silhouette are important to be seen and where things will be blocked off.
I encourage you to use a weaker tape at first. That way you can adjust easily if needed.
With placement in mind, I’ll tell you that things may look wrong as your placing it on your window but in my experience, it tends to look much better when you actually go outside and look.
So be sure to take breaks and check from outside before you make adjustments. Then from outside, if things need adjusting, take note of which direction needs to be moved. Up, down, a little left or right?
After you’ve got everything where you want it, go back through and secure your silhouettes with the stronger clear duct tape!
And you’re done!!
Super easy right?
There are a lot of silhouettes out there if you google or search on Pinterest.
Happy Tracing!
