Spring has quickly come to an end, and Summer is here, yay!
As the weather heats up an increase in farm fresh eggs being laid increases too. With the dozens of eggs being laid daily here on the farm, I took it as an opportunity to share with ya’ll this fun new DIY Egg Foraging Apron I made recently.
Fall is without a doubt my favorite season (I much prefer the cold to the heat). However, there is one thing I love about the higher temperatures that the cold lacks and that is an abundance of eggs.
Chickens have a natural egg-laying cycle, depending on the breed chickens will on average lay at least one to two eggs daily in the Spring and Summer.
As the temperature drops and Fall and Winter creeps in, they’ll start to lay only one or two eggs a week or every other week.
In some cases, chickens may stop laying altogether.
Which if you haven’t ever owned chickens you might not have thought about (I definitely didn’t before moving out to the farm).
Since so many of us get most of our food, including eggs, from the grocery store we probably don’t consider that just like ourselves chickens are mammals. Even though we have access to eggs year round when we go to the store, that’s not actually an accurate portrayal of the natural egg-laying cycle for chickens.
I won’t get into how the commercial egg farms have managed to overcome this obstacle today. However, if that is a topic you all are curious about and would like me to discuss in another post leave a comment below.
Anyway, on the farm where I live, we have around 40 or so chickens and as you can imagine we suddenly have a ton of eggs. Although I don’t really eat many eggs myself right now Tom eats like 9 a day.
Every morning he was going into the coop, several yards from our house and coming back with his shirt being used as a makeshift gathering apron filled to the brim with eggs.
I thought this fun Egg Foraging Apron DIY would be a perfect Summer sewing DIY to share with ya’ll that you guys and Tom could appreciate.

This Egg Foraging Apron holds up to 10 eggs. There’s still more room to add an extra row to hold even more eggs. Maybe a larger single pocket to hold freshly picked garden vegetables to make it more multifunctional.
You’ve probably seen a lot of people use wire baskets and buckets to gather eggs. Those are great too, but I’ve found that it’s a lot easier for the eggs to break.
Unlike a metal bucket, this Egg Foraging Apron is designed with individual pockets to snuggly hold, protect and carry your farm fresh eggs. When using a metal basket or bucket if it’s not completely full the eggs can roll around, crack and make a complete mess.
The Egg Foraging Apron is also nice because it ties around your waist so you have both hands free to carry other things if you need too!
