A Vintage Mid-Century Modern Floral Couch

Sharing is caring!

I realize this isn’t my normal kind of post here on the blog. But I just had to share with you guys this mid-century modern style couch I got over the weekend!!

This vintage couch was posted in the free section on Craigslist.

And I fell completely in love the moment I saw it.

Originally I had planned on taking the couch apart.

I purchased a chair at the thrift store a few weeks ago and have been planning on it being my next reupholstery project.

When I saw this couch on Craigslist I thought the vintage floral fabric would be perfect to reupholster the chair in.

However, when Tom and I pulled up to the couch to load it up I fell in love with this couch.

The one picture of the couch posted didn’t do it justice at all.

After staring at the couch for a second I realized it was more than an old couch. Good for parts only.

It was a vintage mid-century modern style couch!

The Mid-century modern home decor style has been a popular look for a while now. It took me a while to warm up to the style.

For so long I was dedicated to the vintage farmhouse look.

Who was I kidding?

I love anything that is vintage.

The mid-century modern movement originated back around 1933 to 1965

An era I’ve always loved.

Needless to say, it was just a matter of time before I hopped on the bandwaggon.

I knew I couldn’t just tear it apart now.

It’s a mid-century modern style. If I had to guess the former owners of this beauty have had it for a very long time.

The couch is in amazing condition for it’s age!!!

The muted olive green vinyl upholstery has only a few minor rips in it here and there. But is otherwise perfect.

Unfortunately, the floral fabric isn’t in as great of shape. But considering this floral couches age it’s really not too bad either.

There are rips along the top and a significant amount of rips on the cushions. Which you can’t see from the photos because I flipped the ripped side over so it didn’t get worse.

I’ve been trying to figure out how I can go about restoring the floral fabric. Originally I was thinking I could just stitch up the rips, but I don’t think that’s an option.

Since the floral fabric is vintage it’s become somewhat delicate. And may rip further if I try to work with it too much.

The only other option I can think of is to try and find the same fabric and reupholster it using the new fabric.

I’m absolutely in love with the floral design. And really want to try and keep the exact pattern at all costs. The colors and details that the flowers have are so pretty. I don’t think it would be the same if I tried to use another variation.

Do any of you guys know of a place you can find and buy vintage fabric?

I’m thinking there must be a place where you can enter a brand and maybe a selection of upholstery fabrics are pulled from that brand to sort through.

If you anyone knows of a site like this please please please let me know!

I’m desperate to keep this floral fabric. I’m trying to find a tag but haven’t found anything yet.

In addition the floral design on this mid-century modern couch, I’m also in love with the tufting on the backrest.

The tufts are almost exactly like the tufts in my vintage chair I recently reupholstered in dark green velvet. I shared all about it with you guys here on the blog.

Talk about meant to be, am I right?!

I have mentioned this once or twice here on the blog. However, if you don’t already know let me tell you how obsessed with green I am.

I started to love the color green, especially in my home decor style a couple years ago.

Although, for some reason, it’s really started to become apparent in the last several months.

In addition to my recently reupholstered chair, the other couch in our living room is a green mid-century modern style. In fact, it’s frame is very similar to this vintage floral couch.

Anyway, the rest of the couch that isn’t covered in the florals is green vinyl. It’s the cherry on top of what makes this couch so perfect to me.

Some of you might find green vinyl fabric material weird, but for some reason I love it.

It’s quirky and unique, and I’m all about quirky and unique.

The couch reminds me of my great grandpas’ house. We would go over to visit my grandpa almost every weekend. I remember him having furniture all around his house just like this when I was a little girl.

Of course, back then I didn’t value stuff like this like I do now. It breaks my heart when I think of all the amazing and meaningful things I could have kept in the family and cherished when he passed away.

Do you guys have things like that in your life?

Stuff you wish you would have cared about years ago to keep in the family, that you’d die to have now. Instead, now long gone but you can still remember being part of so many childhood memories.

That’s what this couch reminds me of. Something that would have sat in the living room in my great grandpas’ house, where my brother and I would watch cartoons as children.

They just don’t make furniture like this anymore.

At least not very many companies do.

The one exception, of course, would be Anthropologie

I’m not sure I’ve talked about Anthropologie on here before but I LOVE LOVE LOVE everything about Anthropologie.

They have a bunch of furniture where they do gorgeous things with floral fabric.

If you look at my Home Decor Inspiration Pinterest board you’ll see a lot of their chairs that have florals mixed in.

If you’re like me and love this look too, I can bet you’d fall in love with their stuff.

Of course, along with their beautifully perfect furniture, home accents, and clothes is a high price tag. I wish I could buy everything in their store but it’s simply not my current reality.

However, I do have a few things from Anthropologie.

You might recognize the mustard yellow pillow in the photos. That is from Anthropologie and is also part of Joanna Gaines’ collection she designed specifically for Anthropologie.

I also have their Georgina Duvet you might have seen in a couple of my older posts; a DIY Calligraphy Scroll Wall Art and DIY Hanging Wood Night Stand.

I recently bought a few clothes in their clearance section too.

Did you guys know they had a clearance section?!

Not me, but I ended up making out like a bandit.

Joanna’s pillow I also got on clearance believe it or not.

Even the clothes I bought on clearance. They originally ranged from $200 to $160. After the markdown, I didn’t pay more than $70 for a single item.

Honestly, I can’t believe that. Now I know they have a clearance section I feel like I’m going to be in trouble…

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this post and love the couch as much as I do.

Let me know if anyone knows of a place I can find vintage fabric for a specific item. Once/if I find a tag I’ll share it on my Instagram with you guys too.
